John Hall's Zygmunt Bauman Remembrance Published

An essay by research professor John Hall remembering renowned Polish sociologist Zygmunt Bauman has been published in the latest issue of the French journal Socio.

The essay, titled “Liquid Bauman” after Bauman’s influential book Liquid Modernity, reflects on Bauman’s life and work, as well as Hall’s experiences working with him.

Bauman, who died in January at his home in England, was an influential critical sociologist who wrote about many topics including modernity, postmodernity and the Holocaust.

Hall had been corresponding with Bauman for a chapter for the forthcoming second edition of The Handbook of Cultural Sociology.

The Handbook, edited by Hall and his UC Davis sociology colleagues Ming-Cheng Lo and Laura Grindstaff, is a collection of essays from sociology scholars around the world. Bauman was revising a chapter he had written for the first edition when he and Hall last talked.

Hall’s essay was published in French and English in a special 2017 edition of Socio dedicated to Bauman, and in Spanish in the May-August 2017 issue of Revista Mexicana de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales.
