Patrick Carroll's Book Translated into Chinese for a Distinguished Science and Culture Series

Associate Sociology Professor Patrick Carroll's book Science, Culture, and Modern State Formation has been translated into Chinese as part of a series on science and culture by Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press.

The publication is supported by the nonprofit China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), which has been working since 2014 to translate significant science culture books from foreign researchers into Chinese. Carroll’s book was one of the first 11 translated.

Science, Culture, and Modern State Formation, published by the University of California Press in 2006, examines the role of “engine science” in creating the modern state of Ireland. The book describes how an engineering culture became a foundation of the modern political state and explores the implications for nation-building in a post-colonial world.
