Professor Bruce Haynes was invited to speak at the National Urban League's Centennial Conference on July 28th-31st in Washington, D.C.. Bruce gave the opening speech at the “black-tie” gala dinner on the last night of the conference. He talked about his grandfather's legacy and his overlapping interests in race relations, urban, and community sociology. George Edmund Haynes was co-founder of the National Urban League as well as the first Black to receive a doctorate from Columbia University (1912), founder of the Social Science department at Fisk University, and one of the first professional sociologists in the United States. The event Saturday honored Maya Angelou, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Levar Burton, and Alfre Woodard as “Living Legends” for their work to advance the standing of African-Americans through their work and life.
