Continent's End

I am developing a new study about “Continent's End” (from the Robinson Jeffers poem) that deals with notions of place, isolation, and incorporation of once-remote communities into modern societies. The work began with a public service effort on the Big Sur, central California coast and has branched out to a work of historical sociology including places like western Ireland.

Methodologically the project entails complementing the spare historical record in these places with literary works that may have evidentiary value. Or, at least, I am pursuing questions about how, for example, the locally-informed narrative poems of Jeffers may be used in conjunction with county tax and federal manuscript census material to recover the history of Big Sur and how similar research strategies may work in other legendary places.
