Selected Writings

This web page makes available a sample of my recent work and activities for interested friends, colleagues, students, and organizations. My hope is to share these materials and to exchange ideas with persons working on related matters.

These writings deal with a variety of topics from the fields of urban sociology, historical and comparative studies, collective action, and public memory. They include treatments of California history, environmental politics, food riots, globalization, social movements and rebellions. Cross-cutting these subject matter areas is a prevailing interest in the methods and strategies of social research – how we devise method to fit distinct problems and what we learn from such distinctive strategies as comparison, case study, microhistory, collective memory.

The material is in several forms. First, there are copies of articles, reviews, and book excerpts representing a range of my (mostly) recent work. I include a few older pieces because they develop notions that I continue to use. Second, there are several forthcoming items, provided here in part as a preview of new work.
