Degree Requirements

The Department of Sociology offers two major programs, Sociology and Sociology-Organizational Studies. Students selecting the Sociology major must choose an emphasis in order to fulfill the Sociology degree requirement.


The Sociology major is comprised of four emphases. The General emphasis allows students to obtain a broad understanding of the concepts, methods, and theories of sociology. The Law & Society, Social Services and Comparative Studies & World Development emphases provide a sociological perspective on legal issues, social policy and economic changes throughout the world, respectively.

Sociology-Organizational Studies

The Sociology-Organizational Studies major develops a broad understanding of the political, social and economic organizations that comprise modern society. This major emphasizes a sociological perspective, but incorporates a multidisciplinary field of study. The major introduces students to a range of theories and methods that social scientists use in the analysis of organizations.
