The John and Lyn Lofland Undergraduate Research Award
The John and Lyn Lofland Undergraduate Research Award celebrates John and Lyn Lofland’s contributions to sociology and in particular to the undergraduate sociology program at the University of California at Davis. The award was established in 2009 and the Department hopes to make the first ward in the 2009-2010 academic year.
John came to UC Davis in 1970 and Lyn arrived in 1971. They were instrumental in creating many of the defining features of our undergraduate program. They helped establish the sociology honors program, the research assistant program, undergraduate seminars and a chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society. The Undergraduate Research Award celebrates these and the many other improvements that John and Lyn made to the sociology program at UC Davis.
The John and Lyn Lofland Undergraduate Research Award honors excellence in undergraduate research in sociology. Undergraduate research provides students with an opportunity to apply sociology to questions about social life. It reflects their skills in formulating questions, drawing conclusions from findings, and fine-tuning arguments. For most students, it is their first experience doing original, in-depth research.
Applications: UC Davis junior and senior sociology majors who complete a substantial piece of sociological research are encouraged to submit their papers electronically to Janet Gutierrez (jangutierrez@ucdavis.edu), the Sociology Undergraduate Program Coordinator. Sociology faculty may also nominate students' papers for consideration. The Undergraduate Program Committee will review all submissions and recognize one or more of these undergraduate research papers with the John and Lyn Lofland Undergraduate Research Award. Each year the Undergraduate Program Committee will determine the amount of the awards given. The John and Lyn Lofland Undergraduate Research Award fund will support the cost of the individual awards and also other expenses associated with making the awards (e.g., awards ceremony, department plaque).
Donations: John and Lyn Lofland and members of the UC Davis sociology department have generously donated funds to establish this award. The department hopes to raise additional funds to endow the award so that it will be given in perpetuity.
