Sociology - Social Services Emphasis
The Department of Sociology offers a program of study that emphasizes the interactive perspective on family, community, social problems and social services. In order to provide a focused course of study within this emphasis, the department offers a semi-structured program of courses and practical experience in the field of social welfare, the family, psychology and stratification.
The nucleus of the program includes three courses:
- THE FAMILY - the history of cross-cultural perspectives of family life with attention to power relations within and beyond the family;
- SOCIAL STRATIFICATION - the systems of social ranking, power, prestige, culture, styles of life, various social classes and social mobility; and
- SOCIAL WELFARE - sociological analysis of the evolution and current organization of welfare functions in modern societies. This program provides a strong liberal arts education and adequately prepares students to work in the “diverse” social environment of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Twelve units within the area of race and ethnicity (including both lower and upper division) are required to complete the program. Students round out this program with courses chosen from areas of social issues, social interaction, gender, organizational behavior and methodology.
The Social Services program prepares students for a wide variety of careers including social services and counseling services, teaching, health care, community service management and academic careers. Students planning to do graduate work in counseling should consider Education 163, Psychology 142 and 168, and Human Development 12, and 100A-C.
