Professor Bill McCarthy’s research on teenage sexuality makes national news.

Bill was interviewed for a segment on CNN about his research with former UCD Professor Eric Grodsky on the differences in several educational outcomes between teenagers who are sexually active within committed romantic relationships, teenagers who are sexually active but not involved in romantic relationships, and teenagers who are not sexually active. "Compared to abstinence, sexual intercourse in committed romantic relationships is often academically harmless, whereas in other types of relationships it is more detrimental….Females and males who have sex only with romantic partners are generally similar to abstainers on most of the education measures we examined." The unpublished study, which was presented at the American Sociological Association's annual meeting in Atlanta, complicates the assumption of many sexual education programs that any sexual activity produces negative outcomes for teenagers. The research was also summarized in a UPI story which was circulated via roughly one thousand papers and online new sources.
