Sarah Ovink Awarded AERA Dissertation Grant
Sarah Ovink was awarded a dissertation grant from the American Education Research Association with support from the National Science Foundation. The program seeks to stimulate research on U.S. education issues using data from the large-scale, national, and international data sets supported by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), NSF, and other federal agencies, and to increase the number of education researchers using these data sets. Sarah will be using the Educational Longitudinal Study (ELS) to test a theoretical model of Mexican American educational pathways which she developed from her in-depth interviews with over 60 Mexican American high school students. She is particularly interested in understanding how motivations, aspirations, and expectations contribute to gender disparities in postsecondary outcomes among Mexican Americans as well asother racial/ethnic groups.
