Bio

Haruka Sugimori is a doctoral student in Sociology. Her research interests include technoscientific knowledge and expertise, moral and professional beliefs, and risk perceptions with a particular focus on the alternative protein movements in the United States and Singapore. Her master's thesis at the National University of Singapore examined the reskilling strategies of food scientists innovating novel foods, cell-cultured and plant-based proteins, in Singapore. Drawing on in-depth interview data, the research explored the scientists' reskilling as a future-oriented practice of capital reappropriation, delineating new skill categories calibrated to anticipated innovation and production demands.

Haruka completed her double bachelor’s degree in Sociology at the National University of Singapore and International Liberal Studies at Waseda University. Before joining UC Davis, she was a Sociology master's student at the National University of Singapore. Previously, she worked as a human resources professional at Goldman Sachs in Tokyo and Hong Kong.
